About the tour
Bill's many years of teaching really make a difference in what students learn and really understand because he always tells the students the ‘why’ of techniques and theory.
Day 1 usually has some specific color theory for the Island of Korcula as well as some basic design/composition theory.
Bill will provide notes beforehand on these basics (in print or by digital files), which will be useful for students to refer back to during the tour and also on future painting excursions of their own.
Each teaching day will begin with a demonstration onsite at the day’s location. Demos will alternate between oil and watercolor. Theory about composition, order of painting, simplification with elimination of unnecessary detail, and value/color considerations.
"I circulate among the students and help them out with problems as they pop up, giving valuable advice and solutions. I know that, on any location, there are always many possible paintings that are equally good.
I will suggest a number of these before students start and find that they will usually end up painting something different from the others- different subject, different angle, and different composition.
The day ends with a group critique where the student not only benefits from the critical analysis of their own work but enjoys the same process for all their fellow students."
Here is an example itinerary of how you can expect your 10 days to go (this schedule is always subject to change) :
DAY 1
Transfers depart at 10:00am from Cavtat main bus station on the start date of the tour. Our transfer will drive along the coast where we will stop for lunch at Vila Koruna in Ston, which is about half way. We then make our way to Orebic where we catch a car ferry to the Island of Korcula. Here you will be able to settle into your home away from home at Hotel Liburna in Korčula town.
DAY 2-9
A buffet breakfast will be served daily, before travelling to different parts of the Island. On the tour you will see vistas rich in vineyards, quiet coves, small beaches, flourishing olive tress and quaint architecture. This part of Croatia is unique in its beauty, encouraging one to take pleasure in painting and sketching.
Your painting tour includes scenic areas such as Zrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica, Orebic and Peljesac Peninsula (Mainland), Racisce, Korcula and Lumbarda, as picked by your instructor. Our day will begin at 8am with breakfast and then the day is set in motion by your instructor… each instructor will vary slightly but mornings and afternoons will be for painting, with a box lunch on location, in between.
At the end of the day we will return to the our hotel. You will have some time to yourself before the evening meal at 7pm and are encouraged after dinner to spend time exploring the area or enjoying wine with your fellow artists, relaxing before your next day of painting.
During this trip you will also get a glimpse into the life of locals by enjoying a tour of the old town of korcula, a few tastings of local delicacies and wine.
We always include a day off for our painters to enjoy also abit of downtime.
DAY 10
This is your transfer day back to Cavtat. You check out by 10am. Your bus will pick you up at the hotel at 11am and will transfer you back to Cavtat for about 3pm.
